Review:
I understand how many people see this movie in the context of Hurricane Katrina. But even as former residents of the Gulf Coast, which was out Alicia, Claudette, Allen, Rita, and Ike, I see this film in a much larger context. Beyond stereotype and archetype in - the inhabitants of the bathroom are poor drunk at the mercy of the environment, are the people who live in the world. Hushpuppy has a drunken father, she has a father, with many of the flaws and strengths of the immortal epic hero - anger, pride, love and genuine concern. Hushpuppy up not only a girl, is the child - the supplier of the magic that is real, closely linked with the world of her, imaginatively connected to all things. The outside world is a place of things and machines of bureaucracy and rules - and is never actually called, you see, because that reduces it. Everything in this film exists within the realm of the archetype, and see that in mind, many of his posts cosmic importance. Beautifully shot, beautifully acted - it will take a few more days for the whole thing to fall apart completely in Outstanding!
