Review:
Don Jon has been very well received in the regional premiere of Paramount Theater during the SXSW Film Festival Austin. The film was written, directed and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. He does work really well for writing and directorial debut, but he may have been trying to do too much. Reading Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Tony Danza, Glenne Headly, and Brie Larson is quite good. I think it's Gordon-Levitts script let it down. Jon character is a successful womanizer who also rely on masturbation to internet porn? several times a day. Many people find that the film is very funny and enjoyable. However, the use of graphic porn is not in any palate and can be intimidating to the audience? audiences, particularly women. I also wonder if using a lot of porn will lead to the MPAA to give kiss-of-death NC-17 instead of R rating.JGLs script is well-intentioned and trying to make the point that many people be so, selfish that they lose the ability to interact with others on a human level. Jon is offset by a true love story with an addiction to porn. His girlfriend has a very romantic reports based on watching too many romantic movies. Both are so selfish and self-centered that can really build a real relationship. However, it is difficult to understand that the point is JGLs and in many ways has become more apparent to him during the Q & A after the film. JGL trying to raise profound questions of human relations in the modern era, but have yet to figure out how to do that as a writer and director. I expect that he will be as good a writer and director as he is an actor. He has a bright future ahead of him.
